WebbJune Newton began his career as a photographer unintentionally by chance. In 1970, her husband fell ill on the eve of an important commercial photo shoot with the cigarette brand Gitanes . In this situation, June grabbed the camera and took care of it, transmitting all the know-how that Helmut had taught her. WebbThere are too many iconic photographs by Newton to fit in our building, so we had to be selective, but we sorted it out in themes to let the collection as a whole make sense as an exhibition. The exhibition features 18 original, vintage silver gelatine prints showcasing the widely imitated fashion photographer’s erotically charged, black-and-white vignettes, often with voyeuristic and fetishistic undertones, which were the cornerstone of fashion bibles like Vogue. WebbMost of his fashion and nude photographs in the 1970s were shot in New York, Las Vegas, Miami and Los Angeles. In the 1980s, Newton and his wife June started travelling regularly to Los Angeles, spending the winter months at the Chateau Marmont. In this period, he did a lot of portraits of the famous and infamous in and around Hollywood.
